How to care for your merino wool – a simple guide
In this guide we explain how to clean Hundlands merino wool products, such as the Hybrido dog coat and the Warmee vest and jacket.
Air first – wash only when needed
Merino wool is naturally self-cleaning, so it rarely needs washing. Hang the item outdoors for a few hours to freshen it up, or lay it in the snow. Odours and moisture disappear naturally. This saves both time and wear on the material.
Tip: You can also put the item in the freezer for 6–12 hours to quickly freshen it up and reduce odours.
Remove stains gently
Wool fibres repel dirt, so smaller stains can often simply be brushed off.
If a stain won't budge:
- Wipe gently with a damp cloth
- Avoid rubbing – it can damage the fibres
- Work carefully so you don't press the stain into the material
Never use:
- Bleach
- Strong stain removers
These destroy the natural properties of the wool.
Washing advice
If you've tried airing the item and still feel it needs a wash, we recommend following the instructions below.
Hand wash
Fill a basin with lukewarm water (approx. 30°C) and add a gentle wool detergent. Submerge the item and move it gently in the water for 1–2 minutes. Rinse in clean water. Gently press out the water (do not wring).
Machine wash
Choose a wool programme. These usually run at 30°C with a slow spin and gentle drum movements. Use a gentle wool detergent. Avoid fabric softener, which damages the wool fibres. Ideally wash the item in a laundry bag to protect it from friction against the drum.
Drying
Never tumble dry merino wool. Lay the item flat, for example on a towel, and let it air dry. Don't hang wet items – they can lose their shape.
Please note that incorrect care can cause the wool to lose its unique properties, shrink or change in texture.
