How to measure your dog
The right size makes a big difference. A coat that fits well keeps your dog warm where it matters, doesn't chafe and lets your dog move freely. Measuring only takes a minute – watch the video above and follow the steps below.
What you need
- A soft measuring tape. If you don't have one, use a piece of string and measure it afterwards with a ruler.
- A dog that's standing up – ideally with a treat within reach.
- Ideally a second person to keep your dog still.
How to measure – step by step
Let your dog stand straight with its head in a natural position. Measure directly against the fur without pulling the tape tight.
A. Back length
Measure from the neck, where the collar rests, along the spine to the base of the tail. The back length is the most important measurement for a good fit.
B. Chest
Measure around the chest at its deepest point, often just behind the front legs. The size chart shows maximum measurements.
C. Neck
Measure around the neck where it is widest. The size chart shows maximum measurements.
Choose the right size
Compare your measurements with the size chart on the product page. Measurements vary between our models, so always check the chart for the specific coat you're interested in.
- Start with the back length. It determines the length of the coat and therefore the fit.
- Check the chest measurement. The coat should close without being tight.

Common mistakes
- The dog isn't standing straight when you measure. Make sure your dog is standing in a natural position.
- The back is measured from the neck to partway down the tail instead of to the base of the tail. The measurement then often comes out one size too big.
- The tape is pulled too tight.
- The size is guessed from breed or weight, but dogs of the same breed can have very different measurements.
